My theme? My angle?

I'm a third year Carleton Comm Student with a special interest in sociology. I'm taking Systems of Power and Stratification (the class this blog is an assignment for), this being my fourth sociology class of my academic career. As you may have figured out by having read a few of my posts-- my reflections in particular-- I tend to apply my interest in media, communications, and media's undeniable influence on us to the topics we discuss in class. Some how it just always works its way in there ! Communications, being a fairly new field of study, borrows many theories from sociology s well as other disciplines and therefore what I learn in my Comm classes is easily applicable and congruent to what we discuss in SOCI 3010. Looking at the things we take for granted, such as the advantaged position we occupy being educated young people in Canada, through a sociological lense is what I believe is the objective of the course. The scholars we read in this class and their thoughts on power systems at play in micro and macro terms are interesting and important positions and opinions to learn about regardless of one's University major. Understanding the power systems at play in all that we do and all that we understand is of key importance to understanding politics (both at home and abroad), race relations, gender relations, etc etc and the list goes on.
In other words.. despite my usual less-then enthusiastic opinion of culminating activities, I consider this blog and ths class not to be a giant waste of time.
Wow.
